In 1999, I moved from Maui to Los Angeles, California. I wanted to be a big movie star! Haha! I first got a job as a waitress in the Barefoot Bar portion of Duke's Malibu, a very popular restaurant in Malibu. I had to pay the bills, of course!
I moved there by myself and secured an apartment in Venice Beach, two miles from the ocean! I loved it there! Once I got settled, I signed up with Hollywood Casting Co. to do background/extra work. Back then, you couldn't just sign up with an agent, you had to do background work to get your SAG card.
I started working at different Hollywood Studios right away! I was on Beverly Hills 90210 twice. Once in Donna's shop, shopping on Valentine's Day and once in the night club, sitting at the table right next to the main characters of the show! I was also on the popular show, Ally McBeal. I played a lawyer during Christmas time, and I walked past Calista Flockhart during one of her big scenes. I was also on The Drew Carey Show. I played a groupie for Eddie Money. We rushed around him and asked for his autograph. What a blast! I was also on That '70s Show. I sat behind two of the main characters in a movie theatre during the movie Anne Hall. It was so much fun!
I really enjoyed my background/extra work, but it only payed $35 a day, and it took away from my full-time work at Duke's, where I made $300 a day. So I put my acting on hold and took improv classes and continued to waitress and play at the beach.
Duke's Malibu attracted many movie stars and celebrities. I waited on Jennifer Lopez, Adam Sandler, Fiona Apple, John Lovitz, Bono from U2, Anthony Michael Hall, Kirstie Alley, Nick Nolte, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Topher Grace and more! It was so exciting and fun! I worked there for 2 1/2 years. Then I decided to move to Sonoma County, California, where my family lived, to be a substitute teacher.
More recently, I was fortunate enough to act as a background artist on the comedy movie, Wheels of Fortune. I was in six different scenes. I played in the audience of a monster truck show. I walked past the main stars and sat in the bleachers just behind the main stars as well. It was filmed in Petaluma, California at the fairgrounds. It was great fun!
I'm still interested in acting in movies and on television here in San Francisco, California. I love comedy and action! Hopefully I'll get some speaking roles and blog about it!
